Optic Flow Estimation

Extended global variational approach by a Finite Element discretization (FEM) for Optic Flow estimation.

See application examples that can be addressed by this approach (link).

The extension of a global variational Optic Flow estimation covers the following properties:

  • dense and smooth displacement vector fields by a globally convex variational ansatz,
  • better numerical accuracy by
    • a discretization of the differential equations based on Finite Elements (FEM),
    • a multi-resolution approach,
  • extended applicability compared to the classical approach:
    • only two images of a time-sequence are necessary,
    • the time-gap between images may be comparable large,
    • the approach can still be applied on bigger pixel displacements.
